This is the first fork in the road for any solar project, and it changes your cost, your equipment list and what happens the moment the power goes out.

On-Grid Solar

On-grid solar connects straight into the utility grid and uses it as your battery. Every kilowatt hour you generate but do not use goes out to the grid, and most provinces credit it back through net metering. No battery required, the lowest upfront cost of the three, and the grid quietly picks up the slack the moment the sun goes down.

Many owners also use the battery to store cheap overnight power, or their own solar, for use during expensive peak hours.

Monocrystalline Panels

Cut from a single silicon crystal, which is why they carry the highest efficiency and the most consistent output of any common panel type. This is the standard we install, since roofs rarely have space to spare and every extra point of efficiency matters.

Inverters, Three Ways

String inverters are cost effective for simple, unshaded roofs. Microinverters attach to each panel individually, so one shaded panel does not drag down the whole array. Hybrid inverters manage both solar and battery flow in a single unit.

Most provinces run a net metering program, which credits you for the surplus power your panels send back to the grid, so you are not just giving electricity away for free. The exact credit rate and rollover rules differ by utility, which is worth confirming for your specific address.

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan program wound down in late 2025, so it is no longer part of the math.
