When to bring in outside engineering consultancy (and when not to)

Bring in outside engineering consultancy when the problem is specialised, time-boxed, or outside your team's core expertise — a simulation study, a feasibility assessment, a design review before a costly commitment. Do not outsource work that is central, ongoing and load-bearing for your product; that expertise should live in-house.

What makes a good consultancy engagement?

A clearly bounded problem with a defined deliverable. 'Tell us whether this bracket survives the load case' is a great engagement. 'Help us with engineering' is not — it has no end state and no way to judge whether it worked.

When should you hire instead?

When the same problem keeps coming back every month. Consultancy is the right answer for a spike in demand or a gap in depth. It is the wrong answer for a permanent hole in your org chart, and any honest consultant will tell you so.
